How to make a seamless Instagram carousel in Canva

Build it as one wide image and slice it afterwards. Designing slide by slide rarely lines up.

A seamless carousel is a single image cut into slides, so that swiping feels like panning across one picture. Built the obvious way, one slide at a time with the edges matched by eye, it rarely lines up exactly.

Built the other way it is simple: one wide canvas, design freely, slice at the end. The numbers you need come from two sets of limits, Instagram’s on what a slide can be and Canva’s on how wide a canvas can get, and this guide works both out for you.

What you need to know first

Before the step-by-step, these are the points that decide the outcome. If you are in a hurry, the first one covers most cases.

  1. One wide canvas, then slice

Design on one canvas that is 1080 px wide per slide. Splitting at the end means the seams match, because they were never separate.

  2. 4:5 is the tallest slide

Instagram says its supported range runs from 1.91:1 to 4:5. At 1080 px wide, 4:5 is 1080 × 1350, the tallest portrait slide.

  3. Canva limits the canvas width

Canva’s custom size maximum is 8000 px on the long side, so a canvas at 1080 px per slide fits up to seven slides. More than that needs two canvases.

  4. Export PNG, not JPG

Canva recommends PNG for graphics. A flat colour or gradient crossing a seam is where compression is easiest to notice.

The canvas maths

Slides Slide size Canvas to build Fits Canva’s limit
2 1080 × 1350 2160 × 1350 Yes
3 1080 × 1350 3240 × 1350 Yes
5 1080 × 1350 5400 × 1350 Yes
7 1080 × 1350 7560 × 1350 Yes
8 1080 × 1350 8640 × 1350 No, over 8000 px wide
3 (square) 1080 × 1080 3240 × 1080 Yes
7 (square) 1080 × 1080 7560 × 1080 Yes

The width is the number of slides times 1080, and the height stays the same. Canva’s Help Center gives the custom size limits as a minimum of 40 × 40 px and a maximum of 8000 × 3125 px, with the larger value allowed on either side. If the Custom size box turns red, a value is outside those limits. For a carousel longer than seven slides, build two canvases and have the design finish and start cleanly across them.

Building it

Step 1: Create the wide canvas

In Canva, choose Custom size and enter the full width and 1350 px for the height. For three slides, that is 3240 × 1350.

Step 2: Show the cut lines

Turn on rulers and guides, which Canva lists under the shortcut Shift+R, and drag a guide to every 1080 px. These are the cut lines. Designing without them visible is how content ends up sliced in half.

Step 3: Design across the full width

Treat it as one image. A landscape photo spanning all the panels, a headline that starts on slide one and finishes on slide three, a product that sits across a seam. That is the point of the format, so commit to it.

Step 4: Keep important things off the seams

Keep faces, logos, prices and any word that has to be read well clear of every guide. As a suggestion, leave a margin of a few dozen pixels on each side. Content that crosses a seam is fine when it is background or texture, and a mistake when it carries meaning.

Step 5: Export the full canvas as PNG

Go to Share, then Download, and choose PNG. Canva says its Quality settings, Compress, High and Limit size, are available on paid plans. If you have them, avoid compressing, because you want the cleanest source before slicing. Every later step can only lose quality.

Step 6: Slice into equal panels

Use Canva’s Image Splitter app, or any free image splitter, set to one row and as many columns as you have slides. A splitter calculates the cut points, so it is more reliable than dragging by hand. Check that each resulting slide is exactly 1080 px wide and the same height.

Step 7: Upload in order

In the Instagram composer, add the slides from left to right and check the preview order before you post. A carousel in the wrong sequence is easy to avoid and annoying to fix once it is live.

Keep every slide the same size. Instagram says the orientation you choose applies to all items in a carousel, and that unsupported ratios are cropped. If you mix sizes, some slides can be cropped and the seams will no longer line up.

Mistake What you see Fix
Designing slide by slide Edges nearly but not quite match Build wide, slice after
Exporting as JPG A faint colour step can appear at a seam Export PNG
Mixed slide sizes Instagram crops some slides Keep all slides identical
Text across a cut line Words split mid-letter Keep it clear of the guides
Uploading out of order Panorama in the wrong sequence Add left to right and check the preview
Splitting a low-resolution image Soft, blurry slides Start from the full canvas export at its largest size

Gradients are the unforgiving case. A flat colour crossing a seam survives almost anything, while a soft gradient can show a visible step if the panels are resized or compressed differently.

Before you hit publish

One canvas at 1080 px per slide, guides on every cut line, design across the whole width, export PNG, slice, and add the slides in order. Built that way, the seams line up because they never existed.

If you are unsure which ratio to commit to, the aspect ratio guide explains what each one costs you in feed space. The Canva shortcuts list includes Ctrl+D to duplicate, which helps when you repeat elements across panels.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Instagram carousel slide be?

Instagram says photos are uploaded at the best quality up to a width of 1080 px, and that a photo keeps its resolution when its ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5. At 1080 px wide, 4:5 means 1080 × 1350. Canva’s Design School also lists 1080 × 1350 for vertical Instagram feed posts. A square slide at 1080 × 1080 sits inside the range too.

Can slides in one carousel have different ratios?

No. Instagram says that in a carousel, the orientation you choose, square, portrait or landscape, applies to all of the photos or videos in the post. If your ratio is not supported, Instagram crops it to fit. Keep every slide at the same size.

How many slides can a carousel have?

It depends which Instagram help page you read. The newest one says up to 20 photos and videos in one post, while older pages still say 10. For a panoramic design built on one Canva canvas, the practical limit is Canva’s size cap: 8000 px at most on the long side, which fits seven slides at 1080 px wide.

Can I split the canvas inside Canva?

Canva lists an Image Splitter app that splits an image into a grid or carousel format and adds the pieces to your design. Canva also notes, on its web tool, that splitting can lower the quality of a photo, so start from a high-resolution image. You can also use any other image splitter, or position the artwork on separate pages by hand.
