About SnapCutout
An independent site about getting images into the shape a platform will accept, written by someone who is not a designer either.
Why this site exists
Almost everyone now has to prepare images. You list a product, you post a job ad, you upload a passport photo, you send artwork to a print shop. And almost everyone hits the same wall: the file is the wrong format, the wrong size, or too heavy, and the error message explains none of it.
The advice online is either written for professional designers, using software that costs a monthly fee, or it is a thin page of affiliate links pushing a converter. SnapCutout is the third option: specific numbers, free tools, and an explanation of what each step actually does to your file.
Who writes it
My name is David. I am not a designer and I have no formal training in graphics. I learned this the way most people do, by needing something done and working out how. What I do have is a long list of files that were rejected, compressed into mush, or printed blurry, and the notes I made so it would not happen again.
That is the whole basis of this site. Where I am confident, I say so plainly. Where something depends on your particular file or platform, I say that too, rather than inventing a rule.
How the guides are put together
- Check the source. Platform image requirements come from the platform's own help pages, not from another blog repeating a number from 2019.
- Test the steps. If a guide says a setting produces a 200 KB file, that is because the file came out at 200 KB, not because it sounded plausible.
- Prefer free and in-browser. Paid software appears only when there is no workable free route, and it is always labelled as paid.
- Flag the one-way doors. Compression, resizing and format conversion throw data away permanently. Anything irreversible is marked in red before the step.
- Revisit. Interfaces and platform limits change. Guides carry an updated date and get corrected when a reader tells me something has moved.
What the site covers
- Image Formatting & Compression: File types, resolutions, sizes and compression: how to get an image into the exact format a platform wants without wrecking the quality.
- Canva & Software Shortcuts: Fast, jargon-free tutorials for Canva and other beginner-friendly design tools, covering the shortcuts and workarounds that save real time.
- AI Visual Tools: Honest comparisons of AI image tools for background removal, upscaling, restoration and generation, with clear free-versus-paid breakdowns. (in preparation)
- E-commerce Photo Guides: Platform-by-platform photo requirements and techniques for Amazon, Etsy, Shopify and eBay sellers who need listings that convert. (in preparation)
How it is funded
SnapCutout is free to read and is paid for by advertising through Google AdSense. Ads only load after you accept them in the cookie banner; if you reject, the site works exactly the same. Advertisers have no say in what gets written, and no guide recommends a tool because someone paid for the placement.
Corrections
If a number here is wrong, out of date, or a step no longer matches what you see on screen, please tell me: the contact page takes about a minute. Corrections get made and the updated date on the guide moves.
