How to make a product cutout in CapCut on mobile

It is a video app with a background remover inside it, and it works on still photos as well.

CapCut is a video editor, so using it to cut out a product photo feels like a detour. CapCut itself promotes the background remover for photos, and it can be a quick option when you already have the app on your phone.

This guide sticks to the routes CapCut describes in its own pages, and says plainly what those pages do not settle, such as which plan you need and exactly which file format the mobile app saves.

What you need to know first

Before the step-by-step, these are the points that decide the outcome. If you are in a hurry, the first one covers most cases.

  1. Free, according to CapCut

CapCut’s marketing pages say exports are high resolution with no intrusive watermark, even on the free version. Another CapCut page lists the remover among Pro tools, and the help page does not say. Look for a Pro badge.

  2. Two routes to the tool

Inside a project, select the clip and use Remove BG. For a single photo, CapCut also lists All tools, then Photo editing, then Remove background.

  3. Custom removal fixes edges

Auto removal makes the first pass. Custom removal lets you brush over areas to keep and erase parts that should go.

  4. Expect it to need a connection

Pages summarising CapCut’s AI tools say most of them need an internet connection, so check yours first if the remover will not run.

The two routes CapCut describes

Route Where Best for
Inside a project Select the clip, tap Edit, then Remove BG A photo already on a timeline
Photo editing All tools on the home screen, then Photo editing, then Remove background One photo, with a transparent or solid colour result

Remove BG offers three options: Auto removal, Custom removal and Chroma key. For a product photo you want Auto removal first and Custom removal if the edges need work.

Route A: inside a project

Step 1: Start a project and import the photo

Open CapCut, create a new project, and add your photo from the gallery. It appears on the timeline as a clip.

Step 2: Select the clip and open Remove BG

Tap the clip on the timeline, tap Edit, and choose Remove BG. If your version labels it differently, such as Cutout, look for the same three options.

Step 3: Choose Auto removal

Tap Auto removal and wait for the background to disappear. The subject stays and the rest turns into the transparency pattern in the preview.

Step 4: Fix the edges with Custom removal

If Auto removal cut into the product or left background behind, switch to Custom removal. CapCut describes a brush for marking areas to keep and an eraser for removing unwanted sections. Zoom in before you work on an edge.

Route B: the Photo editing route

On the CapCut home screen, tap All tools, scroll to Photo editing and choose Remove background. CapCut’s guide says you can then pick a transparent background or one of the solid colour presets. This route is aimed at a single photo, so it is the more direct one when you do not need a video project at all.

Export, then check the file

Tap the Export icon at the top right. For video exports, CapCut lets you change resolution, frame rate and code rate. Whatever route you used, open the saved file afterwards, place it over a coloured background and look at the edges and at whether the transparency survived.

Do not assume a video export keeps transparency. MP4 is a common video format, and CapCut does not say that its mobile exports carry transparency. If your result arrives with a solid background, use the Photo editing route and check what the saved file looks like.

What tends to be hard for any automatic cutout

This part is general experience with cutout tools, not something CapCut documents.

Product type What to expect What helps
Shoes, boxes, books Usually clean Check the corners
Bottles, jars Usually good Check the neck and cap
Jewellery, chains Fine gaps are hard Custom removal, by hand
Glassware Transparent areas confuse the tool Shoot on a plain background
Clothing on a hanger The hook can disappear Restore it with the brush
Plants, flowers Gaps between leaves get filled Expect to repair them

The biggest improvement happens before you open the app. A white product on a white sheet gives any tool little to separate, and the same product on a mid-grey cloth is much easier.

In short

Open Remove BG, start with Auto removal, fix the edges with Custom removal, and check the saved file on a coloured background. For a single photo, the Photo editing route may be quicker.

If you are comparing tools, Canva’s background remover is described by Canva as a paid-plan feature, and its guide covers the limits. If it is video backgrounds you need gone, the CapCut desktop guide covers chroma key and auto removal.

Frequently asked questions

Does CapCut put a watermark on cutouts?

CapCut’s marketing pages say the app lets you export high-resolution images without intrusive watermarks, even on the free version, but those pages are months old. A different CapCut page lists the background remover among its Pro AI tools, and the official Standard versus Pro help page does not mention it either way. The only way to be sure is to run a test export on your own account and look at the saved image.

Can I get a transparent PNG out of CapCut?

CapCut’s guide for photos says you can choose a transparent background or a solid colour preset in the Photo editing route, and its online cutout tool exports PNG or JPEG. Which format the mobile app saves depends on your version, so save a test and open it over a coloured background to see whether the transparency survived.

The menu on my phone looks different. What now?

CapCut has renamed this tool over time. Older guides call it Cutout with Auto cutout, while the current pages call it Remove BG. If you cannot find it inside a project, try the other route: All tools on the home screen, then Photo editing, then Remove background.

Is CapCut better than the Canva background remover?

We cannot give a fair verdict, because neither company publishes a comparison and results depend on the product. What the pages do say is that Canva’s plans page marks its photo Background Remover as not included in Free, while CapCut’s marketing pages describe its remover as free, although another CapCut page lists it as a Pro tool. Try both on one of your own product photos.
